“
I planted the seeds of my own self worth in lover’s walks
Holding hands, we trampled them
I’ve wrapped my self worth up in the arms of another but they were
Too weak to carry it for long, or too indifferent
I’ve tasted my self worth on my tongue, on your tongue
When I should have paused to swallow.
I’ve been hiding my self worth
in strange places. Take a breath now.
Pin it to my blood-strained sleeve to sooth that
generous heart. Take a breath. Go on.

“I am not the first person you loved.
You are not the first person I looked at
with a mouthful of forevers. We
have both known loss like the sharp edge
of a knife. We have both lived with lips
more scar tissue than skin. Our love came
unannounced in the middle of the night.
Our love came when we’d given up
on asking love to come. I think
that has to be part
of its miracle.
This is how we heal.
I will kiss you like forgiveness. You
will hold me like I’m hope. Our arms
will bandage and we will press promises
between us like flowers in a book.
I will write sonnets to the salt of sweat
on your skin. I will write novels to the scar
on your nose. I will write a dictionary
of all the words I have used trying
to describe the way it feels to have finally,
finally found you.
And I will not be afraid
of your scars.
I know sometimes
it’s still hard to let me see you
in all your cracked perfection,
but please know:
whether it’s the days you burn
more brilliant than the sun
or the nights you collapse into my lap
your body broken into a thousand questions,
you are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
I will love you when you are a still day.
I will love you when you are a hurricane.”

“Don’t be jealous of anyone. I guarantee you, if everyone walked into a room, and dumped their problems onto the floor, when they saw what everyone else’s problems were, they’d be scrambling to get their own problems back before someone else got to them first.”

The Honeymoon Phase
writingsforwinter:
What I know is this: some of us just don’t make it.
His teeth still pressed into your neck, a bruise left behind
like a necklace of broken stones, the deep ruby of each iris
when he wept & begged you to come back.
They say the spine grows another knob
for each gentle grief.
If so, you were able to stand longer than anyone.
Constantly bending.
Father used to behead the chickens each night before dinner;
they ran still for minutes at a time, headless,
before collapsing.
This is what the honeymoon phase is like.
The softness of his thighs and the moving in tandem,
the final handful of seeds before the axe slides downward.
Honey before the salt.
Moon before the light turns out.
They say the chickens ran to the knife,
fought each other to be the first under the blade.
Kissed its shine like a baptism.

“My message to all men is that you have to kill pride. You’ve been taught that pride is a manly thing, that pride is a good thing. But the problem with pride is that it stops you from growth. When you’re so proud that you won’t change, you’ve got problems. Male pride causes wars; millions of people have died because of male pride, because one man would not back down. Male pride will say, “I’d rather blow up my whole family than have everyone look at me as though I’ve lost.” That is so dangerous.”

“Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don’t mean to do harm; but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.”

“One of life’s best coping mechanisms is to know the difference between an inconvenience and a problem. If you break your neck, if you have nothing to eat, if your house is on fire – then you’ve got a problem. Everything else is an inconvenience. Life is inconvenient. Life is lumpy. A lump in the oatmeal, a lump in the throat and a lump in the breast are not the same kind of lump. One needs to learn the difference.”

you’re the only one who can help you today. your bravery comes from deep inside, and it’s made up of all of the good and bad and ugly bits of your past, so ball it up, hold it tight to your chest and release it onto the world.
